Death Notehas a lot of great characters that fans have loved for years, with one of the most popular being L. L is the world's best detective and has saved the world multiple times. In the manga, he faces off against Kira, a boy who can kill anyone by knowing their name and face.

Keeping himself anonymous throughout the years, L is one man that Kira cannot kill. The two seek to find out each other's identity and make them face their definition of justice. L has had some great quotes throughout his time on the series that has made him one of fans' favorite manga characters.
10 "I Was Testing Him. I Wanted To See What He'd Choose."
L and the police have never completely trusted each other, despite needing help from one another. When the police decided to not catch Kira, only a few stayed with L. They were eventually forced to decide between keeping their jobs or continuing their investigation on Kira. The decision was hardest for Aizawa. He needed to provide for his family but didn't want to leave his team. L made him choose, without telling him that he already made sure that the officers working with him would get paid even if they lost their jobs. Upset that L was making him decide, Aizawa left the group. L's test made him temporarily lose a valuable comrade.
9 "Looks Like Someone Dropped This Cell Phone In The Crowd Earlier."
Despite being a serious series,Death Notehas had some very funny moments. When L met Misa, fans were surprised when he told her that he is a fan of her work. Some of her other fans gathered around and spoke to her while he stole her phone. Due toMisa being the Second Kira and having the Shinigami Eyes, Light thought that he would finally be able to learn L's name and kill him. However, when he called Misa shortly after she left, he was irritated to find out that L answered right in front of him. L's phone rang moments after and he was told that evidence supporting Misa's role as the Second Kira had been found. It would take a long time for Light to defeat his opponent.
8 "If I Die, Would You Take Over For Me?"
Always believing that Light is Kira, Aizawa is not the only person that L has tested. In one of his tests, he wanted to see if Light would take over for him as L if anything bad were to happen to him. Light quickly realized that if he said he would become the next L, then suspicions of him would increase.

However, when L did die, the Task Force asked Light to take over once more. In doing so, he was able to manipulate the people he pretended to help for many more years.
7 "I'll Show Myself To Others As L For The First Time."
In the beginning of the series, L sent FBI agents to Japan to spy on the NPA and those that were close to them. When he found out, Light had the FBI agents killed. This was the moment that L decided he would reveal himself to members of the police that he could truly trust. For years, the only person that knew his identity was Watari. He solved many cases while remaining hidden so revealing himself was a huge deal and a defining moment for the character.
6 "If I Was Kira, You'd Be Dead."
When he showed himself to Soichiro, Matsuda, Aizawa, Mogi, and Ukita, they introduced themselves by using their real names. L then uses his hand to form a finger gun gesture and says "bang". Confused by his actions, he explained that they should be more careful and show concern for their lives. Shortly after, the Task Force is created.
5 "I Am L."
One of the most daring moves that L played in his game was revealing himself to his prime suspect, Light. He decided to attend the same college as Light and tells him who he is. Light pretends to respect and be honored to meet him. However, when he is left alone, Light shows his anger that L played a better move than he expected and that he would be unable to kill him right after they met.
4 "Light-Kun Is My First-Ever Friend."
L didn't have the life that most experience. He was an orphan and when his intelligence was discovered, Watari helped him solve cases around the world. Instead of having his own life, he gained multiple identities and became the best detective. It wasn't until he met Light that he experienced friendship.

Though L and Kira may have been at war with each other, Light became someonethe mastermind could relate to. They were classmates, played tennis together, and helped each other catch Kira. However, Light may not have been the only liar of the two. L has said a lot of things to see how people around him would react and he may have faked his friendship just as much as Light did.
3 "Everyone, The Shiniga..."
After learning about the existence of Shinigami and the powerful notebook,Rem decided to kill him in order to save Misa. Everything went according to Light's plan, proving that he was the smarter of the two. Watari was the first to go. When L realized that his caretaker died, these were his final words before falling out of his chair and dying of a heart attack. Light smiled at him as he died, letting his enemy know that he won. Once L closed his eyes, Light pretended to be afraid for his own life, despite knowing that Rem wouldn't kill him. For years, he would believe that he beat their game.
2 "I, L, Do In Fact Exist. So, Come On! Kill Me If You Can!"
Upon believing that he knew exactly where Kira was and that he would only be able to kill by knowing both someone's name and face, L challenged the murderer. He staged a killing in which a criminal who received the death penalty pretended to be him. After Light played his role as the executioner, L revealed that the criminal was not really him and taunted Kira. By not dying, L's suspicions were confirmed.
1 "I Wanted You To Be Kira."
All along, L knew that Light was Kira. However, when Light lost his memories and another Kira appeared, L had his doubts. This caused him to be depressed, thinking he may have been wrong for once. When Light confronted his friend about it, L confesses that he was hoping Light was Kira. This causes the two of them to fight against each other. Shortly after, L was able to confirm the truth, but it cost him his life.
