Does anyone have good experiences from delivering at Banner Estrella? I think I'm stuck going there and I have heard some bad things...

I had both of my kids at Banner Estrella. I have nothing but great things to say about the hospital and the staff.

With my first, the nurses were great and really helpful/supportive.

With my second, they were also helpful but didn't hover over me to the point where it became annoying (this happened to a friend of mine at another hospital; the nurses kept insisting she was doing everything wrong and it was her 3rd child!).

With my first I wanted to breastfeed and they were very accommodating and helpful. With my second I did formula right away and they were still supportive (I didn't feel pressured to BF).

I had c-sections for both babies, again everyone was extremely helpful and patient. They never forced me to do anything until I felt comfortable (i.e. walking, eating, etc.).

I'm surprised you've heard bad things. I'm kind of curious what they were? That might make it easier to address your concerns.

The bad things weren't directed at the maternity ward, just the hospital in general. Just things from nurses that work in higher level hospitals who get transfers from Estrella... And the transfered patients weren't taken care of.

I see. Well, I have no experience there other than the ER and maternity/postpartum (whichever it's called).

I was taken care of very well. I wouldn't hesitate to go back there for anything else (hopefully I never need to).

My sister in law had a bad experience there. It was more to do with the doctor that delivered though. Her doctor let her push too long. The plates of her sons skull did not fold the way they should have for him to come through the birth canal and he kept getting stuck at her pelvic bone. By the time they finally decided to do the emerg. c-section the damage had been done. He had had oxygen cut off and now he has cerebral palsy. The only bad thing I have to say abot the hospital is that the nurses didn't realize that he was having seizures in the NICU for 8 or 9 hours. After they did though they arranged a hilocopter to take him to a place that could take care of him.

Several moths after all of this she tried to get his medical record from the hospital so she could see it and they refused because they said it was under investigation. it's been 2 years ad I don't think she's received it yet.

I'm sure the hosptial is fine but make sure you check out your doctor really well!

Can't you pick any hospital you want? Your dr just might not have privilages at the one you pick?

Yes, you have to deliver at the hospital(s) your doctor is affiliated with. If you want a different hospital you will probably have to find a new doctor.

I just had to switch OBs due to a change in insurance. With this insurance the prenatal care and delivery will be free, as well as Estrella being the closest hospital for family. Thanks for sharing the good experience that you had!

And yes, I will have to check this dr out well. My last delivery was out in Gilbert. Awesome hospital, staff and dr, just my body didn't seem to want to cooperate.

Estrella happens to be the only other hospital that my OB delivers at other then Banner T-Bird. Im not very familiar with that hospital but i did scheduale an orientation to veiw/tour the maternity ward. The orientation fell on a Wed at 7pm. My fiance and i got there about 15mins early and by 7pm there was about 6-7 other couples waiting to go on this same tour. Once 7:30 came and went we all started getting very upset to the point where people started to leave. Unfortunately we didnt go on the tour because my fiance found it unexceptable to have an appointment set for a certain time only to get blown off. Mind you there was nobody at the registration desk so we had to ask a security gaurd to find out what the hold up was all about.. the gaurd told us that someone was on their way down and yet 15mins later we were still waiting. At that point we left aswell. I'd have to say that was a horrible first experience, and wasnt very assuring. The last thing i'd want is to go into labor then getting to the hospital and having to wait. We decided to stick with Banner Thunderbird which was alot more organized, had someone at the front desk to checked us in and by our schedualed time of appointment they had everyone ready to go.

I delivered there 5 day ago. They were meticulous in their care. I came in because of high blood pressure which soon became normal but they monitored me for hours which ended up saving my baby. In the 5 hours they were monitoring me all tests returned normal but they noticed at one point the baby's heart rate slightly elevated and then later dropped. Which they told me "earned me a ticket to meeting my baby 5 day earlier" (I had an induction scheduled that Saturday). The midwife Anna and the nurse Ms. Hall took turns holding my hand. They were clear on what was happening and answered all of our questions which we had a lot of. They did their best to induce labor and do vagin*l birth but when the babies heart rate kept dropping they did a c-section.

I didn't like the doctors that were assigned to me, but the pediatrician Dr. Tan was great and after birth checked on the baby everyday. I only seen the doctors twice (my OB was on vacation) during my cserian and another doctor who discharged me. The doctor that delivered the baby was a man of few words lol I asked about risk and he said "there is always risk" and when I asked about future pregnancies he said "you can have 10 more babies if you wanted". The worst was the doctor who discharged me, he was so annoyed that I was asking question (I had c-section on Tuesday and was told to go home on Thursday morning).

Now the best were the nurses and lactose support staff. Adriana and Sydney were the best. They took such great care of us. Checking in all the time but not hovering. Lactose specialists were patient in teaching me how to breastfeed and nurse the baby. The care provided by the staff at the hospital was AMAZING, if I had my OB there it would have been really great but even with these doctors that were brief, my experience was great. I am trying to find the list of staff names and send thank you cards to the nurse and midwife that took care of me before the delivery and all the nurses who took cake of Maksim and I afterwards. If there is such a listing please let me know I would really love to do something in return for their amazing care and kindness.
