Pathology Residency at Mount Sinai Medical Center (2024)

Teaching Philosophy

Mount Sinai Medical Center’s mission is to provide high quality care to our diverse community enhanced through teaching, research, charity care and financial responsibility. The academic mission of our ACGME-accredited Pathology Residency Program, in alignment with this goal, is to provide comprehensive post-graduate education in Anatomical and Clinical Pathology to produce pathologists who excel in clinical practice, are lifelong learners and serve the needs of their community.

Our Pathology Residency Program focuses on developing and enhancing the role of the pathologist as a diagnostician and as a consultant. We use one-on-one traditional teaching technique, as well as the latest educational approaches. Our diverse and enthusiastic faculty provides excellent role models for residents and has a proven track record for the highest quality of teaching. The program is tailored to prepare each resident for the practice environment for which they are most interested. Our program aims to:

  • Develop outstanding pathologists, with a broad knowledge in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology, who will become leaders in their specific fields of interest and will engage in projects to improve the standard of practice to assure the highest quality of care.
  • Promote critical thinking habits and to provide education in techniques and methodologies required for lifelong learning.
  • Prepare our residents to effectively communicate with their colleagues and patients, and to support them in the development effective teaching skills to educate colleagues, trainees, patients and the community.
  • Ensure the highest ethical and professional standards and a climate of diversity, equality and inclusion.

Education and Teaching Conferences

The Arkadi M. Rywlin M.D. Department of Pathology has an unwavering commitment to resident education. In addition to one-on-one pathologist-resident interaction, we have numerous well-established didactic and interactive teaching conferences which follow the competency-based and milestone framework as directed by the ACGME.

A comprehensive series of daily intradepartmental pathology conferences is designed to review the multiple facets of pathology. Resident time is protected for these conferences.Interdepartmental conferences occur on a weekly (tumor boards in head and neck, breast, gastrointestinal, hematologic, thoracic and genitourinary/gynecologic) or monthly (surgical pathology and medical M&M) basis. These conferences are designed to review the clinical history and condition of individual patients as well as the radiologic and pathologic findings which are presented by the resident on service.

Other conferences include Medical Grand Rounds which occurs at noon on Wednesday. Clinical pathology residents are expected to attend as their schedule permits. This is designed to provide participants with clinical updates and state-of-the-art discussions of the pathophysiology of disease, as well as an appreciation of the management of disease from a contemporary perspective. Visiting faculty frequently contribute to Grand Rounds. Monthly Morbidity & Mortality conferences occur on the last Wednesday of each month. This conference is devoted to the discussion of differential diagnosis, pathophysiology and ethical aspects of medical care, culminating with the findings on autopsy presented by the pathology resident on the case.

Faculty development conferences on varied subjects (professionalism, teaching methods, evaluations, etc.) are presented by the institution on a quarterly basis and are supplemented with sessions by the AMA. Residents are encouraged to attend in order to further develop their teaching and professional skills.
