Overview

Two rounds of severe thunderstorms impacted southeast Kansas and the Missouri Ozarks on Sunday, May 26th, 2024. The first round occurred late Saturday night of May 25th into early Sunday morning May 26th. This cluster of thunderstorms produced wind gusts of 70 to 80 mph over far southwest Missouri in addition to four tornadoes (4EF-0 and 1 EF-1). Additional severe thunderstorms moved through the area Sunday afternoon and evening. This round of severe thunderstorms produced tornadic supercells that resulted in multiple tornadoes and large hail swaths across the area. Five tornadoes have been surveyed from Sunday afternoon into the evening (2EF-0, 1 EF-1, 1 EF-2, 1 EF-3). Large hail sizes included reports of baseball (2.75 inches) and softball (4.00 inches) sized hail. Lastly, localized flash flooding occurred on both Saturday night and Sunday. Rapid rises along numerous waterways resulted in some evacuations.

Summary:

Early Sunday morning, an EF0 tornado crossed Highway 125 1 mile north of Bradleyville, downing tree branches, then uprooting trees east of the Highway. Swirl marks were evident as the tornado tracked across an open field then damaged trees into a hill to the northwest before dissipating.

Summary:

A National Weather Service survey found an EF-0 tornado with maximum winds of 85mph in southwest Dade county, northeast of Dudenville. Damage to trees and a barn occurred. An irrgation system was flipped. A tornado debris signature was seen on radar at the time of the tornado.

Summary:

Early Sunday morning, an NWS Storm Survey confirmed an EF 1 tornado touched down 6 miles northwest of Mansfield in a hilly wooded area near Highway F and quickly intensified to producing winds to 100 mph, downing numerous trees across portions of Davies and Red Oak Roads before dissipating near Highway V.

Summary:

A brief EF-0 tornado touched down 5 miles southwest of Buffalo. NWS storm survey found determined maximum wind speeds of 65 mph with a path width of 100 yards. Numerous large branches broken and a few trees snapped or uprooted along the tornado path. One home sustained shingle damage to its roof.

Summary:

NWS storm survey concluded an EF0 tornado with peak winds around 80 mph started over the Caney Mountain Conservation Area east of Willhoit and traveled northeast for almost 5 miles. The tornado uprooted several trees and snapped large limbs along its path. A tornado debris signature was present on radar for the duration of this tornado.

Summary:

A National Weather Service storm survey concluded that an an EF-1 tornado with peak wind speeds around 100 mph started 5 miles southwest of Bendavis in eastern Wright County and tracked east until lifting 7 miles southwest of Houston in Texas County. The tornado traveled a distance of 13 miles with a maximum width of 400 yards. The tornado caused extensive tree damage with numerous trees uprooted or snapped. Five outbuildings were heavily damaged or destroyed with one home sustaining roof damage.

Summary:

NWS Storm Survey concluded that a low end EF-3 tornado with peak wind speeds near 140 mph started 7 miles west northwest of Mountain View and travelled east for over 12 miles before lifting north of Montier. This storm severely damaged three homes and completely destroyed a manufactured home. Multiple outbuildings were also heavily damaged or destroyed. The tornado also uprooted or snapped numerous trees.

Summary:

NWS storm survey concluded an EF2 tornado with peak winds near 125 mph started 2 miles northeast of Birch Tree and travelled east southeast for just over 3miles before lifting 4 miles east of Birch Tree. The tornado crossed Highway 60 just east of County Road 421. This tornado removed the roof of one home and destroyed a saw mill. Numerous trees were also uprooted or snapped along the path of the tornado.

Summary:

The combination of an NWS Storm Survey and reports from the public led to the determination that an EF-1 tornado touched down early Sunday morning to the east of Myrtle in far southeast Oregon County. One home suffered siding damage and an outbuilding was destroyed, along with numerous trees suffering damage that ranged
from limb damage to being uprooted along County Road 288 before the tornado crossed the Eleven Point River near the Myrtle Access and then crossed into Ripley County north of County Road 286.

Wind & Hail:

In addition to tornadoes, the severe thunderstorms produced wind gusts up to 60 to 80 mph and hail up to the size of baseballs (2.75 inches) and softballs (4.00 inches).

Wind

While damaging wind gusts were reported throughout the event, between 3 and 5 AM, a particular strongcluster of severe thunderstorms in far southwestMissouri produced a macroburstwith wind gusts up to 70 to 80 mph.These wind gusts uprooted many trees along its path, including near a COOP sitein Cassville, MO. The widespread swath of damaging winds extended from the Exeter/Cassville area over to Eagle Rock, including Roaring River State Park. Two injuries occurred in Cassville when a tree fell on a house.
